Pope francis

"I am incredibly saddened by the news of Pope Francis’ death.

He was a man with a deep belief in our common humanity.

Through his many writings, talks, interactions, and actions, he reminded us of the importance of love, acceptance, and compassion. He sought to help us understand that we need to care for one another and the environment which sustains us.

His concern for others came through his many calls for peace and the resolution of world poverty. He constantly sought to exemplify a genuine respect for those who felt abandoned, shunned and excluded from society. He regularly reminded us that we share a common humanity, irrespective of where we’ve come from or how lowly or prestigious our backgrounds. When refugees and migrants were being rejected across the world, his words and actions reminded political leaders of our shared humanity and obligations.

Last year his World Day for Children brought together young people from across the globe. Pope Francis sought to highlight children’s nature of innocence, spontaneity, and unconditional love. It was a great reminder of how important they are to us and of our collective responsibility for their wellbeing.

Pope Francis was an inspiration to those of us who seek a just, fair, respectful, and caring world. He showed how humility, as well as strength and commitment to love-based values, can be expressed in practical and meaningful ways. He gave all of himself to his beliefs, his Christian values, and the service of others.

He was a great and good man. He will be deeply missed."
