Centrecare Director – Adj Prof Tony Pietropiccolo AM was a guest on ABC Goldfields - Esperance with Elsa Silberstein where he spoke about the importance of Raising the Age from 10 years of age to 14 years of age for criminal responsibility.
Tony talks about how it is crucial that we raise the age to 14. How we are way out of line with the UN Convention on the rights of the child. How placing children (especially Aboriginal children) in Banksia Juvenile Detention Centre has huge ramifications on the child, their family and their future.
The issue is especially relevant as over the weekend the Labor Party State Conference voted to raise the age of criminal responsibility to 14 which is expected to be effected into law in the not too distant future. This is a controversial decision as there remains in our community conflicting views on the matter. The Raise the Age piece begins at 17.20 and Tony at 24.50.
