$2m State Government funding commitment for the construction of the refuge
Refuge to offer a safe place for women and children escaping domestic violence
Construction of a new refuge for women and children escaping family and domestic violence is currently underway in Ellenbrook.
The project is a collaborative partnership between the Department for Child Protection and Family Support and the Department of Housing. Child Protection Minister Helen Morton said the family refuge reflected the State Government’s commitment to ensuring West Australians felt safe in their homes and communities.
“As part of this commitment, $2 million has been provided for the construction of the refuge, with additional funding over four years allocated to operate the facility,” Mrs Morton said. “The State Government made an election commitment to build two new refuges in the metropolitan area. This refuge sees the first part of that commitment fulfilled.
“The new refuge will offer five independent units of various sizes in a secure location. It will include support and outreach services for both clients accommodated in the units and women in the community seeking support,” the Minister said. The Department for Child Protection and Family Support will manage the refuge’s operations and is currently seeking a service provider to run the facility.
